Upper St. John River Valley (USJRV) Irish Memorials
While not a widespread phenomenon in Carleton, Victoria and Madawaska counties, certainly there were pockets within these counties that were settled primarily by Irish settlers. In particular, the farming community of Johnville in Carleton County was one of the earliest successful planned communities specific to Irish settlement. This was the result of the untiring efforts of the Catholic church through the efforts of Rev. William Dollard and Bishop John Sweeney (after whom the community is named).
In respect of the efforts of Bishop Sweeney to make life better for his fellow Irish, the community erected a stone cairn in his honour.
