Born, November 30th, 1854, at Baker Brook, Madawaska County, N.B. of Irish and French ancestry. Son of Enoch Baker, and his wife Madeline Ouellette. (Grandfather, Nathan Baker, was the elder brother of John Baker, who figured in the Maine Boundary Dispute, 1827 – 1828. John Baker came to Madawaska in 1820 from the Bay de Chaleur area. He married his brother, Nathan’s widow (nee Sophia Rice, daughter of Enoch Rice, Brookfield, Mass. She died in 1883, aged ninety-eight years.)

Educated at the public school.

Located at Baker Brook, Madawaska County, N.B., and engaged in farming, lumber scaling, and as a forest inspector. Was a Justice of the Peace, and a Parish Court Commissioner.

Was active in Militia affairs, enlisting in 1869 in the 67th Batt. as a private, and rose to the rank of Lieut. Col. Commanded the N.B. Batt. in 1885 in the Canadian West at the time of the second Riel Rebellion.

Married: (1st), September 1876, to Miss Vennie Hebert, daughter of Lawrence Hebert, Esq., farmer, Madawaska, Maine, U.S.A. By this marriage there was a family of two sons and one daughter. She died, March 1, 1888, aged 41 yrs.

Married: (2nd), June 21, 1892, to Miss Bethsaidie Martin, daughter of Chrisotome Martin, Esq., farmer, Caron Brook. By this marriage there was a family of one daughter.

First elected to the House of Assembly of N.B., as one of the members for Madawaska County, at the G.E. of March 3rd, 1908. Sat as member until the dissolution of the Legislature in 1912, when he retired from active politics.

He died, October 28th, 1930, at Montreal, P.Q., aged seventy-five years. Buried in the R.C. Cemetery, Baker Brook, N.B. Survived by his widow, two sons and one daughter.

Mrs. Baker died, October 3rd, 1951, aged ninety years.
