Born, July 2nd, 1823, at Grand Lake, Queen’s Co., N.B. of Irish ancestry. Son of James Butler, Esq., (1798-1861), Halifax, N.S. and his wife, Mary Smith (d. 1841), the daughter of a UNited Empire Loyalist. Grandson of Walter Butler, who came from Waterford, Ireland in 1790.

Educated at the Common School of Grand Lake, N.B.

 

Located at Grand Lake, queens Co., and engaged in business as a Justice of the Peace, and a writer of Deeds & Wills. Member of the Natural History Society, and was particularly interested in Botanical Research.

Married, 1854, to Miss Janet Anne, daughter of Hanford Sewers, Esq., of Dutch descent. By this marriage there was ______________.

First elected to the House of Assembly, as one of the members for Queens Co., at a bye-election held September 25th, 1867, to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of the sitting member, John Farris, Esq. (q.v.), and sat that Parliament until its dissolution in 1870. Defeated at the G.E. of 1870, and at a bye-election held Jan 21st, 1872, to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of the sitting member, Gideon Dore Bailey, (q.v.). Again elected at the G.E.’s of 1874, and 1878, and sat until the dissolution of Parliament in 1882, when he retired from active political life.

In 1833, he was appointed High Sherriff of Queens County, which position he held until 1893, when he retired into private life.

He died, May 3rd, 1913, at his residence, Grand Lake, Queens Co., N.B., aged 89 years, and was buried at Newcastle Creek, Queens Co., N.B. Survived by ______________.
