Born, June 13th, 1858, on board a ship crossing from England to Saint John, N.B. of English and Irish ancestry. Son of John Agar (Sailor), and his wife, Mary Lewis, Irish.

Educated at Saint John, N.B., and in the School of Christian Brothers, Liverpool, England.

Was employed by a Liverpool Firm, and then returned to Saint John where he was employed by Levin & Allinham, Hardware merchants, in 1874. Became Pres. of the New Freeman Publishing Co.; a Director of the N.B. Petroleum Co,; President of the Board of Hospital Commissioners; Member of the Saint John School Board; Served as an Alderman on the Saint John City Council in 1912. Was a member of the Canadian Club; K. of C.

Married, June 13th, 1883, to Miss Margaret Allen, daughter of John Allen Esq. (Fish Merchant), Halifax, N.S. By this marriage there was a family of two sons and four daughters.

Unsuccessfully contested Saint John County for the House of Assembly of N.B., at the G.E. of Febuary 28, 1903; and at a Bye-Election held December 30th, 1904, to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of the sitting member, Hon. A.T. Dunn (q.v.).

First elected to the House of Assembly, as one of the members for Saint John City, at the G.E. of August 10th, 1925, and sat that Legislature. Re-elected at the G.E. of June 19th, 1930, and sat as member until 1934, when he resigned his seat.

In 1934, he was appointed a Member of the N.B. Liquor Control Board, and held that position until October 31st, 1935, when he resigned, and returned to private business.

He died, May 25th, 1944, at Saint John, N.B., aged eighty-seven years. Buried in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Saint John, N.B. Survived by his widow, two sons, and four daughters.

Mrs. Agar died April 20th 1952.
