How to find us:
From the Trans Canada Highway (Route 2) take Exit 450 and follow the signs for Magnetic Hill and Miramichi. The museum is just past Magnetic Hill on your right.

July – August: Monday- Saturday: 10am-6pm

There are no research fees, but we are a non-profit organization and accept donations. We provide charitable donation receipts for donations over $10.

It is not possible to provide completed family genealogies. Our aim is to assist the researcher so that they can find the materials they require.

A research assistant is in attendance to help you find the subject of your research and your requested material. If the search is successful, we can provide a print out of one or more of the following:

1. pedigree chart for the selected individual
2. family group sheet of a selected family
3. lineage chart between two individuals

The Irish Room is located in historic Thomas Williams House, a 12-room Victorian Museum built by Thomas Williams, Treasurer of the Inter-colonial Railway in 1893. It is an appropriate location as many of the workers for the railway were Irish New Brunswickers.

The facility is conveniently located in downtown Moncton at the corner of Highfield and Park Streets. From the west, and the Trans Canada Highway, Route 2, take Exit 450 onto Mountain Road proceed into the city centre. Turn right onto Highfield Street until you come to Park Street. From the east and Highway 15, take the University Ave exit. Turn left onto University Avenue, crossing Mountain Road (where the same road is known as Archibald Street), and then turn right onto Park Street.

Access to the building is through the front door on Park Street. There is a bell, if the door is locked. The Irish Room is located on the second floor of the facility.

The Irish Room is home to the Westmorland Albert Kent (Moncton) Chapter of the Irish Canadian Cultural Association of New Brunswick and houses the following materials:

  • Index Card Catalogue of Irish and Irish-Acadian vital statistics for the Archdiocese of Moncton. This collection covers the years 1800 –1926 and is housed in alphabetical order. It includes the births, marriages and deaths for all of the Catholic parishes in Westmorland, Albert and Kent counties for all Irish Catholics and those Irish who are married into Acadian families. This is a secondary source but is fully referenced from the original source parish registers and a valuable tool for family genealogists.
  • Census books:
    Westmorland County – 1851,1861, 1871, 1881, 1891
    Moncton, City and District – 1901
    Kent County – 1861
    Albert County 1851
  • Land grant maps for the tri-county area
  • Local maps
  • Many local history books for Irish communities in southeastern New Brunswick as well as others from other regions of the province.

The Irish Room is housed in a museum property. There are no food facilities on-site and no smoking anywhere on the property. You can however bring a light lunch into the Irish Room itself. There is a public washroom and free parking is available at the rear of the building.

Only pencils should be used when going over materials. There are no copying facilities on-site.

The Southeastern Branch fonds are housed in the Heritage Room of the Moncton Public Library. The library is located in the Blue Cross building, Suit 101-644 Main Street, Phone 869-6000.

 

Access to the Moncton Public Library is from the Trans Canada Highway #2.

 

From the east take the exit #467 south on highway #15 south into Moncton. Proceed to the rotary and on to the stop light at Champlain Street. Turn right, west on Champlain, which changes to Main Street, and proceed to the Blue Cross Building, turning left onto Mechanic Street, then right onto Assumption Blvd. to park at the rear of Blue Cross Building.

 

From the west take exit #450 south on highway 126, Mountain Road. Proceed on Mountain Road turning right, south on Vaughan Harvey Blvd. to Main Street. Turn left on Main, proceeding east to the Blue Cross Building 644 Main, turning right on Mechanic Street then right on Assumption Blvd. to park at the rear of Blue Cross Building.

 

The Southeastern Branch fonds are listed on the New Brunswick Public Library Service web site http://vision.gnb.ca/. Most of the fonds consist of material of the Southeastern area of New Brunswick, counties of Albert, Westmorland and Kent. The English fonds are listed in the Vision database with catalog numbers commencing with “RA” and the French fonds commencing with “FR RA”.

 

The fonds consist of copies of birth, cemetery, church and death records, Directories, Family histories, French publications and Local histories; copies of Marriage and Misc. records and Research books and files, Scrapbooks and copies of Vital Statistics.

 

There are also several CDs and a Microfiche collection for Canada, 7 Eastern USA States, England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland that are not in the Vision database.

 

Researchers are encouraged to contact the Library by phone at 506-869-6000 for the hours of operation and to arrange for a Southeastern Branch volunteer for research assistance if required. Access to the Heritage room is given at the Reference desk on the second floor of the library.

 

There are no usage fees and photocopying is available through the reference desk staff. No food or drink is allowed within the Heritage Room.

From the Trans Canada Highway (Route 2) take Exit 450 for Mountain Road. Follow Mountain Road into the city. The Family History Centre is located at the corner of Mountain Road and Maplehurst Drive.

Family History Centres are found throughout the world and are privately funded by the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints.

The Family History Centre provides access to the largest collection of free family history, family tree, and genealogy records in the world. It also provides research guidance, forms, and an opportunity to preserve and share your family history.

A list of materials available is on the website. Some materials are on-site and are card indexed. Off-site materials can be acquired on inter-library loan for a small fee. Materials through inter-library loan can be made accessible for a short period, long term and indefinite terms. We have several sources for Irish research.

Materials located within the Centre are available free of charge to the public. There is a fee for copy services and ordering microfilms and microfiche from the main Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. Some family history forms are available for pennies a copy. We are not a lending library.

There are washroom facilities, free parking, no stairs to climb and an area to eat lunch if you bring one from home. Library rules are posted on the bulletin board as you enter and include: please maintain a quiet atmosphere; smoking is not permitted in the building or on the church grounds; and no food and drinks are permitted in the library.

It is sometimes thought that the Centre d’Études Acadiennes is a research and genealogy centre for mostly Acadian families and communities. Indeed, it has much more. It is a valuable research centre for information on Irish Catholic families in south-eastern New Brunswick – from Kouchibouguac and Rogersville in the north – all the way down to the Nova Scotia border.

All of the Catholic parish registers for the Archdiocese of Moncton are on microfilm from the beginning years of each parish up to 1926. These include the following parishes (the year of their creation is in brackets).

Parking:
Behind the centre on rue Clément Cormier. Payment is made at the kiosk in the parking lot for the amount of time you will be in the centre ($1.75/hr). The ticket should be left in a visible spot on your dash while in the Centre.
