Born, December 23rd, 1893, at Chatham, Northumberland County, N.B. of Scottish and Irish ancestry. Son of Edward Barry, Scottish-Irish, and his wife, Elizabeth O’Kane, English-Irish.

Educated at the Chatham Public school; at St. Thomas College, Chatham, N.B.; at St. Francis Xavier University, graduating with the Degree of B.A. in 1918. Studied law and was admitted to the Bar of N.B. as an Attorney in 1920, and as a Barrister, in 1921.

Located at Chatham, N.B. and engaged in the practice of his profession. Served on the Chatham Town Council as an Alderman. Held several offices in the local and County Liberal Association. Member of St. Michael the Archangel Church.

Married, September 21st, 1925, to Miss Carmel Edith McCarron, daughter of Matthre McCarron, Esq., C.N.R., Moncton, N.B. By this marriage there was no issue.

First elected to the House of Commons, as member for the constituency of Northumberland, at the G.E. of October 14th, 1935. Sat as member until the dissolution of Parliament in 1940. At the G.E. of March 26, 1940, and seeking office as an Independent Liberal, he was defeated.

He died, suddenly, August 17th, 1946, at his residence, Chatham, N.B., aged fifty-two years. Survived by his widow. Buried in the Cemetery adjoining the St. Michael the Archangel Church, Chatham, N.B.

Born, May 21st, 1858, at Maugerville, Sunbury County, N.B. Of Irish ancestry. Son of Patrick Barry, Esq., and his wife, Julia Hayes, both natives of Bandon, Ireland, who emigrated to New Brunswick in 1840, and settled at Maugerville.

Educated at the Maugerville, Public School; at St. Mary’s, York County; and at the Collegiate School, Fredericton, N.B. Studied law in the office of James Arthur Vanwart (q.v.), Barrister, Fredericton, N.B. Was admitted to the Bar of N.B. as an Attorney, June 28th, 1882, and as a Barrister, June, 1884.

Located at Fredericton, N.B., and engaged in the practice of his profession. In 1889, he entered into legal partnership with the Hon. A.G. Blair (q.v.), this partnership continuing until 1896, when the Hon. Mr. Blair was appointed Minister of Railways in the Federal Administration of the Right Hon. Sir Wilfred Laurier. Was appointed a Q.C. in 1899. Was Clerk of the York County Court, and in September, 1899, was appointed Judge of Probate for York County. He held this latter position until his appointment to the Supreme Court.

Took an active interest in municipal affairs, and in fraternal and service organizations. Was a member of the Senate of the Univ. of N.B.; a Trustee of Vitoria Hospital, Fredericton, N.B.; Member of the Fredericton City Board of Health. Was Vice Pres. of the N.B. Barrister’s Association. Member of K. of C.; A.O.H.; C.M.B.A.

Married, June 10th, 1891, to Miss Isabella Owens, daughter of John Owens, Esq., Merchant, Fredericton, N.B. By this marriage there was a family of two sons and two daughters.

On May 28th, 1909, he was appointed a Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court of N.N., vice Mr. Justice George F. Gregory (q.v.), resigned.

On the re-organization of the Supreme Court of N.B., December 11th, 1913, he was appointed a Justice of the King’s Bench Division. On October 1st, 1924, he was appointed Chief Justice of the King’s Bench Division, vice Mr. Justice Harrison A. McKeown (q.v.), resigned. On October 18th, 1945, he retired from the Supreme Court of N.B., due to age.

He died, March 23rd, 1946, at Fredericton, N.B. aged eighty-seven years. Buried in the Hermitage, Fredericton, N.B. Survived by his widow, two sons, and two daughters.

Mrs. Barry died December 13th, 1951.

Baker, Jesse Wheelock

Born, November 30th, 1854, at Baker Brook, Madawaska County, N.B. of Irish and French ancestry. Son of Enoch Baker, and his wife Madeline Ouellette. (Grandfather, Nathan Baker, was the elder brother of John Baker, who figured in the Maine Boundary Dispute, 1827 – 1828. John Baker came to Madawaska in 1820 from the Bay de Chaleur area. He married his brother, Nathan’s widow (nee Sophia Rice, daughter of Enoch Rice, Brookfield, Mass. She died in 1883, aged ninety-eight years.)

Educated at the public school.

Located at Baker Brook, Madawaska County, N.B., and engaged in farming, lumber scaling, and as a forest inspector. Was a Justice of the Peace, and a Parish Court Commissioner.

Was active in Militia affairs, enlisting in 1869 in the 67th Batt. as a private, and rose to the rank of Lieut. Col. Commanded the N.B. Batt. in 1885 in the Canadian West at the time of the second Riel Rebellion.

Married: (1st), September 1876, to Miss Vennie Hebert, daughter of Lawrence Hebert, Esq., farmer, Madawaska, Maine, U.S.A. By this marriage there was a family of two sons and one daughter. She died, March 1, 1888, aged 41 yrs.

Married: (2nd), June 21, 1892, to Miss Bethsaidie Martin, daughter of Chrisotome Martin, Esq., farmer, Caron Brook. By this marriage there was a family of one daughter.

First elected to the House of Assembly of N.B., as one of the members for Madawaska County, at the G.E. of March 3rd, 1908. Sat as member until the dissolution of the Legislature in 1912, when he retired from active politics.

He died, October 28th, 1930, at Montreal, P.Q., aged seventy-five years. Buried in the R.C. Cemetery, Baker Brook, N.B. Survived by his widow, two sons and one daughter.

Mrs. Baker died, October 3rd, 1951, aged ninety years.

Born, November 3rd, 1847, at Bairdsville, Carleton County, N.B. of Irish-Scottish ancestry. Son of George Baird, Esq., and his wife, Frances Jane Bishop. (George Baird was a native of Graffe, Monaghan County, Ireland, who emigrated to N.B. as a young man, and with his brothers Henry and Adam were the original founders of Bairdsville. They were descendents of a member of the Baird Family in Scotland, who emigrated to Ireland in the Reign of King James I, and settled in Ulster.)

Educated at the Bairdsville Public School; the Carleton Grammar School; and the Provincial Normal School, Fredericton, N.B. Taught school for a number of years.

Located at Andover, Carleton County, and engaged in the mercantile and lumbering business, and became one of the leading merchants and industrialists of the Upper St. John River. Took an active interest in the public affairs of the day. Was appointed a Justice of the Peace for Victoria County. Was Postmaster of Perth, N.B., 1878 – 1882. Was a member of the A.F. & A.M.

Married, June 12th, 1879, to Miss Ida Jane Sadler, daughter of Capt. Dexter W. Sadler, St. John, N.B. By this marriage there was a fmaily of two sons and one daughter.

Unsuccessfully contested Victoria County for the House of Assembly of N.B., at the G.E. of June, 1882.

First elected to the House of Assembly, as one of the members for Victoria County, at a bye-election held June, 1884, to fill the vacancy created by the resigantion of the sitting member, Richard White L. Tibbitts (q.v.), and sat the remainder of that Legislature. Re-elected at the G.E.’s of April 28th, 1886, and January 20th, 1890. His election at the G.E. of 1890, was protested, and he resigned his seat. On seeking re-election at the Bye-Election, held August, 1890, he was defeated. He was again elected to the House at the G.E. of October 22nd, 1892, and sat as member until the dissolution of the Legislature in 1895, when re retired from active political life.

On March 11th, 1891, he was called to a seat on the Legislative Council of N.B., and continued a member of that body until its abolishment in 1892.

On June 19th, 1895, he was called to the Senate of Canada and continued a member of that House until his decease.

He died, April 21st, 1917, at his residence, Andover, N.B., aged sixty-nine years. Buried in the Church of England Cemetery, Andover, N.B. survived by his widow and two sons, a daughter having pre-deceased him.

Mrs. Baird died, November 11th, 1930, aged seventy years. (B. Nov. 18, 1859). Buried in Trinity Church Cemetery, Andover, N.B.

Born, ___________, 17__, in Ireland. Of Irish – Scottish ancestry. Second son of Captain William Baillie (D. 1812), 17th Light Dragoons, Innis-Shargie, County Down, Ireland, and his wife, Elizabeth Combie (D. 1850), daughter of Col. Combie, Sussex, England.

Educated at the public schools in Ireland.
 

Enlisted in the Imperial Army, and came to New Brunswick as a Lieutenant in the 23rd Reg. Fusileers, locating at Fredericton, York County.

Married, (1st), June 16th, 1824, to Miss Elizabeth, daughter of Major Townsend Monckton Hall, 28th Foot Regt. She died, June 14th 1830, aged thirty years. Survived by two sons. Buried in the Old Cemetery, Fredericton, N.B.

Married, (2nd), August 17th, 1832, to Miss Elizabeth Odell, daughter of the Hon. William Franklin Odell (q.v.), Provincial Secretary of N.B.
 

On October 19th, 1824, he was appointed Commissioner of Crown Lands and Forests, and Surveyor General of N.B., vice the Hon. Anthony P. Lockwood, who had held these positions from April 28th, 1818 until 1823. Mr. Baillie held these positions until September, 1851, when he retired on a pension of 500 pounds per annum. In addition he was given a supplementary pension by the British Govt.

On November 14th, 1824, he was appointed to His Majesty’s Council of N.B., and continued a member of that body until its dissolution December 31st, 1832.
 

He was named a member of the First Executive Council of N.B., February 11th, 1833, by Lieut Governor Sir Archibald Campbell. He continued a member until December 29th, 1837. He was again a member of the Executive Council from February 15th, 1847 until May 22nd, 1848.

He was also a member of the Legislative Council of N.B. from February 11th, 1833, until 1844, when he resigned.
 

First elected to the House of Assembly of N.B., as one of the members for York County, at the G.E. of October 14th, 1846, and sat as member until the dissolution of the Legislature in 1850, when he retired from active politics.

He died, June 5th, 1863, at Boulogne-Sur-Mer, France, having retired in Europe. Buried ____________. Survived by ____________.

(Note: His residence in Fredericton, N.B. was called the Hermitage, a well-known landmark. He was a capable executive official, but inclined to extravagance, thus attracting much criticism.)
